HOTEL CAFÉ ROYAL - LONDON

Bespoke chandeliers in Murano glass for Ten room and lobby Hotel Café Royal.

In 1863, a French wine merchant named Daniel Nicholas Thévenon and his wife-Celestine arrived in London in an attempt to escape creditors in Paris. So began a story that grew out of bankruptcy and culminated in the creation of Café Royal a true London legend. Thanks to its position, between Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus, during the twentieth century, Café Royal was the epicenter of fashionable London, welcoming leading personalities, writers like Oscar Wilde and Conan Doyle, rock stars like Rolling Stones, Lou Reed and David Bowie, actors, sportsmen and famous names like Liz Taylor, Brigitte Bardot, Muhammed Ali and Lady Diana, and was a legendary and iconic landmark of the social scene of the English capital.

MULTIFORME® in collaboration with Poliform took part in this important project developed by the archistar Sir David Chipperfield for the furnishings and lighting of the historic Ten Room, lobby and restaurant. In particular, our staff, shoulder to shoulder with the Poliform Contract division team, developed the engineering of the chandeliers for this luxury hotel: starting from the study of the historic images necessary for a stylistic reconstruction faithful to the Deco style light points that characterize the furnishings, we realized big custom chandeliers in Murano glass that illuminate the generous spaces of the rooms.

As soon as you enter the hotel, you are welcomed into an elegant and refined environment, with pastel colors, gold and multiplied by the many mirrors on the walls in a game of repetition of spaces and symmetries. The relaxation and conversation areas are different and characterized by comfortable armchairs and sofas in precious fabrics such as velvet and leather. The large Murano glass custom chandeliers made by MULTIFORME® have a particular geometry realized by repetition of elements in opalescent silk artistic glass. In the chandeliers of this hotel, audio speakers are housed for the distribution of music all around.

The gallery of the Ten Room restaurant overlooks the full-height space of the large central hall. The furnishings and materials, such as the precious marbles in shades of gray and white, as well as the seats and upholstery in red leather and tobacco are illuminated by two big style ceiling chandeliers with those of the lower level, but made with amplified dimensions. On the balustrades there are still other models of custom chandeliers in Murano glass, special lighting fixtures in the shape of a printed glass silk cap and framed by important bronze-cast borders: works aesthetically inspired by the period originals present in the Ten Room and the result of a demanding artisan work given the large size of the glass and the special glass techniques and equipment developed to make them and install them.

For us at MULTIFORME® the Cafe Royal in London is a source of great pride as it is developed in one of the most exclusive places in London and Europe for one of the most important luxury hotel chains in the world, in synergy with great designers like David Chipperfield Architects and important companies like Poliform Contract division. A project that has given us the opportunity to further qualify our team of professionals and our quality standards in the production of chandeliers for luxury hotels and in particular of big bespoke Murano glass chandeliers to the full extent of the designer and the customer.
